Lofton Haymons, 98, of McRae, died Saturday, November 18, following a brief illness. A funeral service will be held at 2:00P.M., Tuesday, November 21, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home, with burial at Telfair Memorial Gardens. Visitation is one hour prior to the service.
A native and lifelong resident of Telfair County, Mr. Haymons was the son of the late Lucien and Zimmie Odom Haymons. A farmer, avid sportsman and outdoorsman, he loved working in his yard and tending his flower and vegetable gardens. Of Baptist faith, Mr. Haymons was District Manager for Independent Life Insurance Company for 45 years before retiring. During World War II, he served as a member of the 42nd Engineer Construction Battalion where he was a technician of Co. A and served as a Military Policeman. His military qualifications included Marksman Rifle. Mr. Haymons was decorated with the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon (Japan), Good Conduct Medal, Army Occupation Ribbon, Victory Ribbon and two overseas service bars. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Murlene Cheek Haymons; oldest son, Steven Lofton Haymons; and brothers and sisters, Vivian, Buford, Susan, Lucian, Jr., Verbie, LeRoy, Leila Belle “Polly”, Herschel and Fred.
Survivors include his children, Kim Elizabeth Haymons of McRae and Jeffery Denver (Paige) Haymons of Statesboro; grandchildren, Meredith (Tucker) Dixon, Beth (Alan) Bethea, Brad Haymons, Laura (Kevin) Scott, Morgan Haymons and Finley Haymons; great-grandchildren, Drew Dixon, Ava Dixon, Carter Dixon, George Scott, Amelia Scott and Andrew Scott; nieces, Bobbie Jean (Vernon) Harrington and Sue Ellen Singletary; and sister-in-law, Evelyn Cain Haymons.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
