Mary Helen Bowen, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, departed this earthly realm on the 13th of December, 2025, at the age of seventy-nine, after a valiant battle with an extended illness. Born on the 21st of September, 1946, she graced the world with her presence, and throughout her life, Mary Helen embodied the epitome of a southern Christian lady, radiating kindness and warmth to all who had the honor of knowing her.
Mary Helen found profound purpose in her roles as a homemaker and caregiver, dedicating her life to nurturing her family and steadfastly serving her community. Among her most treasured contributions was her long-standing tenure at McRae Methodist Enrichment School, where her unwavering dedication touched the lives of many. Her legacy of love extended beyond familial ties, as she committed herself to teaching three generations of Sunday School, imparting spiritual guidance and wisdom to countless young souls.
A devoted member of St. Paul Holiness Church, Mary Helen cherished the fellowship she found within her faith community, particularly among the Women of Wisdom (WOW) from Lumber City Church of God and her beloved St. Paul Holiness Church. Her unwavering faith and spirit of service enriched the lives of those around her, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
Mary Helen's talents ran deep; her love for needlework and helping others flourished alongside her passion for music. For several years, she was part of a gospel group that brought joy and solace to many, harmonizing with her late husband, Jack "Carlton" Bowen, and their close friend, the late Terry Giddens. Their melodies resonated with grace, echoing the love and devotion that Mary Helen poured into all her endeavors.
She is remembered fondly by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Cindy Bowen of Helena; sisters, Christine (Harry) Gay of Garfield and Omie Scott of Fitzgerald; grandchildren, Tyler and Ginny Bowen of Columbus, OH, and Lindsey Bowen of Athens; as well as her great-grandchildren, William Bowen and Cora Claire Bowen. Additionally, she leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and friends whose lives were touched by her kindness and compassion.
Mary Helen was preceded in death by her loving parents, Edward Lee Padgett and Omie Oneita Gay Padgett, and her beloved husband, Jack "Carlton" Bowen. Their souls now rest in eternal peace, united in the bonds of love.
In recognizing the profound impact of her life, a visitation will be held at Vaughn Funeral Home in McRae, GA, on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A funeral service to celebrate her remarkable life will take place at St. Paul Holiness Church in Jacksonville, GA, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, commencing at 11:00 AM, followed by interment in the church cemetery.
Mary Helen Bowen's essence shall forever remain alive in the hearts of those she loved, and her enduring legacy of love and faith will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
