Martha Lee McCranie

Martha Lee McCranie, 92, entered into rest Thursday, January 9, 2014  Loving wife of 57 years to the late E. James McCranie, Mrs. McCranie was one of three women in the MCG medical school class of 1945. She did her psychiatric residency at Boston VA. She was a pioneer in her field, as not many women were even accepted as physicians during that time. In 1958, she accepted a position as a child psychiatrist at MCG where she devoted her efforts to teaching, clinical work, and community service. Mrs. McCranie retired in 1981. In the late 70's she was invited, along with a group of other professionals in fields related to children and community care, to visit the newly opened country of China for consultation.

She was a very adventurous person and was always taking her children and grandchildren on expeditions, especially associated with her interest in rocks and shells. Her home was a safe haven where her children and grandchildren were welcomed and cherished. Mrs. McCranie will be most remembered for her attitude of gratefulness and unselfishness.

Survivors include daughter: Nancy M. Higgins (Steve) of Stone Mountain, GA; son: Robert McCranie of Augusta; grandchildren: Kecia Elder, Jason Higgins, Katrina McCranie, Zachariah McCranie, John DelGenio, Emily DelGenio and Kathryn DelGenio; 8 great grandchildren; sisters: Harriet Smith and Celeste Smith and brother: George Smith.
