Frederick Augustus Smith, III

Frederick Augustus Smith, III, passed away on June 13, 2026, leaving behind a legacy imbued with dedication, accomplishment, and enduring family love. Born on April 12, 1947, Frederick’s life spanned nearly eight decades marked by hard work, compassion, and many meaningful connections.

Frederick began his educational journey at McRae-Helena Elementary School before attending Baylor School for Boys, institutions where he developed both his character and his academic foundation. He continued his studies at the University of Georgia, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Frederick’s academic path prepared him well for the professional life that would follow and spoke to his lifelong commitment to learning and self-improvement.

For many years, Frederick resided in Atlanta, where he was actively involved in real estate. His commitment to his profession, relationships, and reputation was evident in all he pursued, and he approached his work with integrity and diligence. After years of service in the industry, Frederick chose to retire to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, embracing a well-earned period of rest in a place that brought him comfort and peace.

Frederick was deeply devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife, Karen, and his sisters, Barbara Smith Cook and husband, Travis, Cathy Smith Elkins, and Carolyn Faye Smith, all of whom shared lifelong bonds of support and kindness. Also surviving are his nephew John Morgan Cook, II, and his wife, Annie; niece, Mrs. Barbara Cheek, and her husband, John. Great-nieces and great-nephews Travis Cheek, Caroline Cheek, Canon Moncrief, Tallulah Cook, Bentley Cook, and Lilly Cook held a special place in Frederick’s heart.

Frederick was predeceased by his father, Dr. Frederick Augustus Smith, and his mother, Barbara Ponder Smith. Their guidance and influence were foundational to the man he became, and their memory remained a source of strength to him throughout his life.

The imprint Frederick leaves behind is visible not only in his professional contributions but most importantly in the relationships he cultivated and the lives he touched. He will be remembered for his warmth, his quiet generosity, and the steadfastness with which he approached both his personal and professional endeavors.
