Elvin W. Dover

Elvin W. Dover, a lifelong resident of Telfair County, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2026, at his residence in McRae, Georgia, at the age of 87. Born on June 24, 1939, Elvin’s life was one defined by devotion to family, deep community roots, and enduring values that touched all who knew him.

Elvin drew his first breath in the welcoming embrace of Telfair County, where he would remain for all of his days—a steadfast presence and a cherished neighbor. Through more than eight decades, Elvin’s kindness, steadfastness, and gentle spirit left an indelible mark on the hearts of friends, family, and the wider community.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Vivian Croteau Dover, who stood by his side throughout 69 years, sharing in both joys and sorrows. Elvin’s legacy continues through his children: son Wayne Dover and daughter-in-law Donna, as well as his daughter Janice Southerland and son-in-law Raye. He was a proud grandfather to eleven grandchildren who will always cherish the wisdom and warmth he so lovingly offered, including his loving caregivers, Tiffany Spires and Jessica Pettis; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Among those closest to Elvin are his sisters, Mary Etta Spires and Rachel Henderson, whose bonds have weathered the passage of time. Nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends also remain to honor his memory, each having felt the gifts of his generosity and unwavering support.

Elvin’s journey was one accented both by triumph and the heartache of loss. He now joins in peace his parents, James Roosevelt “J.R.” Dover and Meda Smith Dover, who instilled the very qualities that guided his path. He is reunited with his sons Gary Dover and Jim Dover, precious granddaughter Alana Land, and grandson Caden Fine. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Edward and Henry Dover, and his sisters Bonnie Walker, Margaret Shepherd, and Velma Spires.

Elvin’s steadfast dedication to his loved ones and community is the legacy he leaves behind—a life filled with moments large and small, meaningful and profound, shared among those who mattered most. He was always quick with a kind word, steady in his friendships, and generous with his time.

A skilled construction worker for most of his life, he was liked to connect with the earth through farming.  His gardens always furnished many with fresh vegetables.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Vaughn Funeral Home, McRae, on Saturday, August 8, 2026, with visitation beginning at 12:30P.M. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 PM at Oak Grove Cemetery, McRae.

Though Elvin W. Dover has departed this world, the impact of his life remains vibrant and enduring. He will be remembered fondly and missed deeply by all who had the good fortune of knowing him.
