Billie Ruth Browning Peace, age 96, of Midway, Georgia, was born on December 15, 1929 and passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026 of natural causes. Billie was preceded in death by her parents, Frances Fitch Hobdy Browning and John Henry Browning; her three brothers, Harold Glen Browning, Charles Browning and Gerald Browning; and sisters, Frances Thomas and Marguerite Weatherly. Billie is survived by her two daughters, Meredith E. Peace and Rhonda E. Peace Gill Owens. Also surviving are a dear niece, Sarah L. Gill and a nephew, Brandon J. Gill. A strong woman of faith who prayed over her family daily and instilled the importance of prayer in everything, she attended Berry College, Georgia State College, the University of Georgia and Regent University. Billie was well known as a gifted teacher and chose the field of special education as her profession.
Her career included being the director of Special Education for Marietta School System, a professor of Special Education at West Georgia College, serving as a judge for special needs student placements in the Gwinnett County School System and teaching students in Virginia and Georgia. Her specialty was teaching non-readers to read. At times, students were passed through several grades without having learned to read, but if they happened to cross paths with Billie, they would learn how to read for the very first time, which was life changing for them. Billie also wrote and published a practical teaching manual for kids with special needs which is still in use today. Other interests included having a doll hospital, doing doll appraisals and making doll clothes. She also enjoyed studying the Old Testament.
A private burial took place at 2:00P.M., Monday, January 19, 2026, at Oak Grove Cemetery in McRae, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the breast cancer research organization of your choice is suggested as Billie was a 19-year survivor of breast cancer. She will be greatly missed but is now home at last with her Heavenly Father.
