Walter Aaron Bland, Sr., (Buck), age 73, passed away peacefully Thursday, September 5, after an extended illness. Buck was born August 11, 1946 in Douglas, Georgia, to Julian and Dorothy Bland of Jacksonville, Georgia. He attended Telfair County schools, was retired from General Motors Corporation and was an army veteran. Buck had resided for the past 28 years in Fernandina Beach, Florida. He maintained close ties to South Georgia and loved his cabin in the woods. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family and friends. Buck was preceded in death by his father, Julian Bland, and brothers, Robert Bland and Johnny Bland.
Buck is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathy Willcox Bland; daughter, Christie B. (Kevin) Doerr of McDonough, Georgia; sons, Walter A. Bland, Jr. and Reid M. (Kristy) Bland, both of Fernandina Beach, Florida; mother, Dorothy A. Bland of Jacksonville, Georgia; brothers, James J. Bland of Jacksonville, Georgia and Roy A. Bland, Sr. of Douglas, Georgia; grandchildren, Lauren Doerr, Austin Doerr, Gavin Johnson, Sophia Bland and Hadley Bland; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00P.M. on Saturday, September 14, at Lumber City United Methodist Church. inurnment will take place at a later date, privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lumber City United Methodist Church, Lumber City, Georgia or to Memorial United Methodist Church, Fernandina Beach, Florida.
